The Char Dhams are open for the general public from first week of May till November depending upon the weather conditions in the region. The four shrines remain closed due to heavy snowfall in the region during December to April. Chardham Yatra stats from Haridwar which is also known as the Gateway of Chardham. From Haridwar start your tour towards Yamunotri via Rishikesh. Rishikesh is also known as Yoga capital of India. Yamunotri is the first destination among chardham. Yamunotri is the seat of goddess Yamuna and the source of Yamuna River. The Yamunotri temple is located in Uttarkashi District Uttarakhand, India, a full day's journey from Uttaranchal's main towns — Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun.The actual temple is only accessible by a six kilometer walk from the town of Hanuman Chatti and a four kilometer walk from Janki Chatti (horses or palanquins are available for rent). The hike from Hanuman Chetty to Yamunotri is very picturesque with beautiful views of a number of water falls. The original temple was built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century. It is said that this temple was destroyed twice by landslides and was reconstructed again in the 20th century. Inside the temple is an idol of Goddess Yamuna carved in black stone that is mainly worshipped.
After touching the soil of the origin of Yamuna River, you need to move towards the source of the Ganga River, the most respected river amongst all other Indian rivers. Gangotri is at a two day's journey from Yamunotri and is believed to be the seat of the goddess Ganga. Gangotri lies in Uttarakashi district of Uttarakhand. Situated at an elevation of 3048 m above sea level, the 20 ft high temple is made of white granite. The temple was constructed in the early 18th century by a Gorkha Commander Amar Singh Thapa. Every Year hundred thousands of pilgrims throng the sacred shrine between May & October. Like Yamunotri the shrine of Gangotri opens every year on the auspicious day of Akshaya-Tritiya & closes on the day of Diwali. Other divine places nearby Gangotri are Bhagirathi Temple, Gauri Kund, Bhojvasa, Harsil, Lanka, Sat Tal. You can rest in one of the few guesthouses and restaurants located here. In case you have time you can also opt to make an overnight 17 Km trip to the real source of Ganga River, i.e. the Gaumukh.
After visiting Gangotri move towards Kedarnath. The Kedarnath shrine, one of the 12 jyotirlings of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Kedarnath range. The Kedarnath Temple is located at 3584 m above sea level on the banks of the Mandakini. The temple is surrounded by snow covered peaks and presents a beautiful sight. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, for Kedarnath is another name of Shiva. It is believed that by praying to Kedareshwar, one can get all his desires fulfilled. Besides being the seat of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath is also the site of Saint Adi Shankar's Samadhi.
Your last halt on this Char dham Yatra would be Badrinath which is at a two day journey from Kedarnath. Badrinath is the most venerated site of all the four sites and is the seat of Lord Vishnu. The Badrinath Temple, built by Adi Shankar in the 9th century, is the place where you should be reaching this place. Out of the numerous murtis present in this temple, the most important one is that of Lord Vishnu carved of black stone. Badrinath is not only one of the Char Dhams or the four holy shrines in Uttarakhand but the shrine is also one of the main Char Dhams of India. Badrinath Temple is situated on the bank of the Alaknanda in the middle of two mountain ranges called Nar and Narayan. There are two natural hot water springs Tapt Kund and Surya Kund. Before entering temple pilgrims take bath in this water and believe that it purifies their soul.
